I'm not usually one for putting photos of celebrities or famous people up on my albums (Terry Pratchett, Christian Kane, & LKH are a few exceptions to this rule) but I actually enjoyed hearing William Shatner speak the first day of D*C 2011. My wife dragged me along - kicking and screaming - as I don't normally attend panels; I'm more of a social butterfly and people-watcher when I'm at D*C.

Photo was taken from ~15 rows from the front during the first "Sh*t My Captain Says" panel. One of my old friends, Marc, was the Emcee for this Q&A panel.

(In my opinion, this seminar demonstrates Mr. Anti.

The official introduction is as below:

Propaganda and Professionalism: how to survive as a journalist in China
with Zhao Jing, a.k.a. "Michael Anti"

Date: April 12, 2007
Time: 5:00pm - 6:30pm
Venue: Foundation Chamber, G/F Eliot Hall, The University of Hong
Kong

Zhao Jing, best known to his readers as "Michael Anti," will speak
about the challenges a young journalist faces in China today. How
does one navigate propaganda and censorship while doing good
journalistic work? "Anti" will describe how the landscape of Chinese
journalism is evolving. He believes that journalistic professionalism is
the only way for Chinese journalists to survive and achieve amidst
tightening control.

A well known Chinese political blogger, "Michael Anti" became famous
when Microsoft deleted his blog at the end of 2005. His case made
headlines around the world and contributed to ongoing debates about
the role of Western companies in China's censorship system.

"Anti" has broad experience with both American and Chinese
journalism. Most recently he worked as a researcher at the New York
Times Beijing bureau. He graduated from Nanjing Normal University in
1995 and majored in Industrial Electrical Automation, but then but
turned to newspapers in 2001. He has been a commentator for the
Huaxia Times, correspondent of the 21st Century World Herald, war
reporter in Baghdad in 2003, researcher at Washington Post Beijing
Bureau, columnist for the Southern Metropolis Daily, and publisher of
the Far and Wide Journal. He is the recent recipient of a Wolfson
press fellowship at Cambridge University.
