A younger and more reluctant Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, sets out on a "unexpected journey" to the Lonely Mountain with a spirited group of Dwarves to reclaim a their stolen mountain home from a dragon named Smaug.

Summary: Many entertainment commentators including the Media Man agency think that 'The Hobbit' may be one of the best and most popular movies in Australia for 2012, despite the late release in the year. One for the whole family, and both casual and die hard fans should love it.

Beyond thinking that the face transformer is cool, I started thinking about the social meaning behind this exercise.

Here I am pretending to be a a “afro-carriabean” - wtf? I mean cool yes, I want to see what I look like as a manga character and am curious to see what I look like as a black person - but there was something odd about trying on different races.

What does it mean for race relations and conceptions when we feel that we can freely try on different races?

I am always really sensitive when people verbally say that a person acts like a certain race. It’s almost akin to imaginatively being another race - kinda like with face transformer. And you know I actually hear it most often among my white and black friends or my white and latino friends. I’ve heard a black person say to a white person, “you know so much about black culture that you are really black or at least must have been black in a past life.” Now I find that on one end to be a compliment, that the white person is accepted as part of the black community, but on the other end I find it difficult to swallow as a form of compliment because only white people are given the latitude to pretend to be another race or ethnicity. For dominant groups, like Caucasians in the states, race can be an after thought so it’s almost like a novelty to pretend for a moment that one is another race or ethnicity. For people who look anything other than white in Western countries, there isn’t as much freedom to forget one’s skin color because they are reminded of it (usually negatively) in their daily interactions. And you don’t usually hear the reverse, that a white person will say to a black person, “wow you know so much about black culture that you are actually white!”

For non-whites, being a certain race or ethnicity can be a complicated process of accepting one’s skin color and the popular conceptions of one’s race or ethnic group. A lot of times, this entails the imagination of being white before a full embracement of one’s race. For a time period when I was a teenager raised in an all white community, I wished I was white so badly so that I didn’t’ have to deal with being looked down upon with racist jaunts by my classmates. And so here I am, trying on a west-indian face – now should I really imagine what it is like to look like an indian female?

In addition, it’s usually people who are more affluent who have the opportunity to learn about another culture and to transplant themselves into another ethnic group’s cultural world - so comments like “wow you know so much about my culture, you must be mexican” just make me uncomfortable because there’s a certain level of privilege that comes with learning about another “culture.” The fact that I make time and spend money to learn spanish because I find the language beautiful and useful is a privilege – of course one that I embrace and am not embarrassed of, but at the same time I am quite aware of my social position to even be able to learn another language more out of interest and less out of need.

So back to face transformer – does this mean america is comfortable with race (and manga, chimps and euro painters) if we can freely try on different races? And what does this say about race when we can collapse large groups of people together into general categories? In Face Transformers all the blacks and africans are grouped into the afro-carridean category, and all asians are collapsed into the east-asian category. this is an odd form of racial reductionism. And where are the latinos – where do they fit in this?

I’ve always kept a tab on these face transformer-like sites and I think the fun in trying these online sites out is an expression of an underlying desire to temporarily imagine another physical body without fully committing to that body/face. And the kinds of changes rendered by these online sites point to a greater cultural obsession or let’s say anxiety with that rendering. So for Face Transfomers we could say this is an obsession with race and euro paintings:) oh and with age also – you can chose to be a young adult, baby, teenager and old person.

One of the predecessors to Face Transformers was My Heritage and I wrote about the social meaning behind that too 2 years ago when it launched. So instead of transforming into a race or chimp like Face Transformer, you can transform yourself to a celebrity and see which one you most closely resemble. So this points to an obsession with celebrities.

Ok that’s it after my social diagnosis I think I will upload another picture on Face Transformer and see what I look like as a Male. Hmmm perhaps I have an underlying anxiety with switching genders?

I did not recognise either of these two actresses and i said to a gentleman with them who turned out to be Kim's husband. He brought me into the hotel lobby and Kim signed and posed for a picture she then called over Samantha Fox who was with her. They were both very nice.

It was here that Madame Tussaud learnt to model wax likenesses under the tutelage of her mentor, Dr Philippe Curtius. At the age of 17, she became art tutor to King Louis XVI’s sister at the Palace Of Versailles and then, during the French Revolution, was hastily forced to prove her allegiance to the feudalistic nobles by making the death masks of executed aristocrats. Madame Tussaud came to Britain in the early 19th century alongside a travelling exhibition of revolutionary relics and effigies of public heroes and rogues.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week: Business, fashion, beauty, deals and gossip...

Sydney will be enjoying a bevy of catwalk shows and party like events as Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia commences tomorrow. But unlike the increasing number of fashion festivals across the country where people can buy tickets to events, MBFWA is invitation only.

Today was media registration day, which was quite an event in its own right.

Over five days, fashion designers show their latest collections to media reps, celebrities and retail buyers, and the response can be paramount to the bottom line.

This year happens to mark Mercedes-Benz’s return to Fashion Week as the title sponsor, which many media and fashion commentators have welcomed.

“The strong link between Mercedes-Benz and fashion was initiated in Australia with the launch of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in 1995, so it’s come full circle,” advised Mercedes-Benz senior manager of corporate communications David McCarthy.

The car maker’s Fashion Week events have spread around the world to places such as New York and Berlin, and to Swim Fashion Week in Miami.

The Mercedes-Benz’s sponsorship deal was not exactly a secret last year as Rosemount’s (wine) five-year run came to an end. The new deal is understood to be valued at million over three years but McCarthy says the details are confidential.

MBFWA comes with a many change. A key change from the festival organisers is that IMG Fashion have reduced the price of on-site venue fees. A trend over the past few years.

This year, it set back exhibitors ,250 to use the newly returned Tent at the Overseas Passenger Terminal as a catwalk venue, 00 to be a part of Fashion Week but show off-site and between 00 and 00 to showcase collections at The Rocks Pop-Up suites.

Two of the festival’s biggest names, Josh Goot and Dion Lee, pulled out a fortnight before their respective shows. The designers who have fallen by the wayside in the lead-up to the five-day event have either opted to concentrate on upcoming overseas shows (Lee), to focus on getting collections out to coincide with northern hemisphere seasons (Goot) or have chosen to disregard Fashion Week from the get-go, with Fairfax Media pointing to Alex Perry as the example.

For Melbourne Business School associate professor of marketing Mark Ritson, having Australian designers drop out is a “tricky” scenario.

“On the one hand, you have to respect any Australian designer focused on building their reputation overseas,” he says. “We are perilously under-represented in Paris and Milan.

“But at the same time, a designer has to be careful of burning branding bridges back home. That said, if Goot or Lee make it in Europe they’ll be welcomed back home in 2013 with open arms.”

Fashion Week is serious business. Alongside Mercedes-Benz, sponsors that have signed on this year include DHL, EYE, HP, Maybelline NY, Redken, Shangri-La Hotel Sydney, Pentax, Keystone Hospitality and Getty Images.

The NSW government, Destination NSW and Austrade are also supporting the event.

In addition, designers are obtaining their own sponsorships. Jayson Brunsdon’s show, for instance, is being presented by Myer and sponsored by Qantas, Woolmark, TRESemme, MAC Cosmetics and Joh Bailey.

Couture designer Johanna Johnson is the virgin Australian designer to showcase her collection at the prestigious Mercedes-Benz Presents show, which has previously featured big fashion names such as Herve Leger by Max Azria, Carolina Herrera and Badgley Mischka.

“To do [the Presents show] during our first year back was a priority,” McCarthy says.

Johnson recently found international success, with Hollywood actresses Christina Hendricks and Maya Rudolph wearing her feminine creations on the red carpet.

The show will have the same feel – glamour, lots of hand-beading and detailed finishes.

“I hadn’t really considered doing it and was focusing more on overseas expansion this year,” Johnson says.

She initially signed on to show in the smallest of the three catwalk venues, the Box, but had to move the show to the Tent (the biggest) as the number of outfits she wanted to parade expanded.

“It’s our debut show so we want it done as well as it possibly can be,” she says.

Australian accessories giant Oroton is launching its first ready-to-wear collection. But for creative director Ana Maria Escobar, the clothes are there to show off the accessories – be they handbags, jewellery or shoes.

“The biggest thing is when I walked into the stores, I saw they needed something soft to highlight the accessories,” she says.

Customers can expect “understated quality” from the new Oroton clothing range.

“To me, functionality is important,” Escobar says.

“So are the materials . . . it can be a simple singlet but made out of really beautiful silk or customised fabrics. There’s a tone of heritage as well.”

While Oroton views Fashion Week as important, Escobar says there is also “life beyond those 15 minutes on the catwalk”.

For the retailer, it’s about reminding people of the brand.

“We want to talk a little louder about the product we design,” she says. “Fashion Week gives us that space without having to scream.”

This year, a great spread of overseas buyers will be in attendance, many from online retailers such as Net-A-Porter, My Wardrobe, Shopbop, Moda Operandi and ASOS. Department store Harvey Nichols and Hong Kong-based Joyce will also have buyers present.

The retail picture in Australia is not particularly strong, and IBISWorld analysts are predicting growth for the local rag trade over the coming financial year will be flat at just 0.5 per cent.

IBISWorld general manager Karen Dobie says the high Australian dollar is a double-edged sword for retailers, as local vendors can buy overseas at a favourable rate, but increasingly tech-savvy competition is straining profit margins.

Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week: Business, fashion, beauty, deals and gossip...

Sydney will be enjoying a bevy of catwalk shows and party like events as Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Australia commences tomorrow. But unlike the increasing number of fashion festivals across the country where people can buy tickets to events, MBFWA is invitation only.

Today was media registration day, which was quite an event in its own right.

Over five days, fashion designers show their latest collections to media reps, celebrities and retail buyers, and the response can be paramount to the bottom line.

This year happens to mark Mercedes-Benz’s return to Fashion Week as the title sponsor, which many media and fashion commentators have welcomed.

“The strong link between Mercedes-Benz and fashion was initiated in Australia with the launch of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in 1995, so it’s come full circle,” advised Mercedes-Benz senior manager of corporate communications David McCarthy.

The car maker’s Fashion Week events have spread around the world to places such as New York and Berlin, and to Swim Fashion Week in Miami.

The Mercedes-Benz’s sponsorship deal was not exactly a secret last year as Rosemount’s (wine) five-year run came to an end. The new deal is understood to be valued at million over three years but McCarthy says the details are confidential.

MBFWA comes with a many change. A key change from the festival organisers is that IMG Fashion have reduced the price of on-site venue fees. A trend over the past few years.

This year, it set back exhibitors ,250 to use the newly returned Tent at the Overseas Passenger Terminal as a catwalk venue, 00 to be a part of Fashion Week but show off-site and between 00 and 00 to showcase collections at The Rocks Pop-Up suites.

Two of the festival’s biggest names, Josh Goot and Dion Lee, pulled out a fortnight before their respective shows. The designers who have fallen by the wayside in the lead-up to the five-day event have either opted to concentrate on upcoming overseas shows (Lee), to focus on getting collections out to coincide with northern hemisphere seasons (Goot) or have chosen to disregard Fashion Week from the get-go, with Fairfax Media pointing to Alex Perry as the example.

For Melbourne Business School associate professor of marketing Mark Ritson, having Australian designers drop out is a “tricky” scenario.

“On the one hand, you have to respect any Australian designer focused on building their reputation overseas,” he says. “We are perilously under-represented in Paris and Milan.

“But at the same time, a designer has to be careful of burning branding bridges back home. That said, if Goot or Lee make it in Europe they’ll be welcomed back home in 2013 with open arms.”

Fashion Week is serious business. Alongside Mercedes-Benz, sponsors that have signed on this year include DHL, EYE, HP, Maybelline NY, Redken, Shangri-La Hotel Sydney, Pentax, Keystone Hospitality and Getty Images.

The NSW government, Destination NSW and Austrade are also supporting the event.

In addition, designers are obtaining their own sponsorships. Jayson Brunsdon’s show, for instance, is being presented by Myer and sponsored by Qantas, Woolmark, TRESemme, MAC Cosmetics and Joh Bailey.

Couture designer Johanna Johnson is the virgin Australian designer to showcase her collection at the prestigious Mercedes-Benz Presents show, which has previously featured big fashion names such as Herve Leger by Max Azria, Carolina Herrera and Badgley Mischka.

“To do [the Presents show] during our first year back was a priority,” McCarthy says.

Johnson recently found international success, with Hollywood actresses Christina Hendricks and Maya Rudolph wearing her feminine creations on the red carpet.

The show will have the same feel – glamour, lots of hand-beading and detailed finishes.

“I hadn’t really considered doing it and was focusing more on overseas expansion this year,” Johnson says.

Millions and millions of people have flocked through the doors of Madame Tussauds since they first opened over 200 years ago and it remains just as popular as it ever was. There are many reasons for this enduring success, but at the heart of it all is good, old-fashioned curiosity. Today’s visitors are sent on a unique, emotionally-charged journey through the realms of the powerful and famous. The museum-style ropes and poles have gone so guests can truly get up, close and personal with A-list celebrities, sporting legends, political heavyweights and historical icons, reliving the times, events and moments that made the world talk about them...

The attraction’s history is a rich and fascinating one, with roots dating back to the Paris of 1770. It was here that Madame Tussaud learnt to model wax likenesses under the tutelage of her mentor, Dr Philippe Curtius. At the age of 17, she became art tutor to King Louis XVI’s sister at the Palace Of Versailles and then, during the French Revolution, was hastily forced to prove her allegiance to the feudalistic nobles by making the death masks of executed aristocrats. Madame Tussaud came to Britain in the early 19th century alongside a travelling exhibition of revolutionary relics and effigies of public heroes and rogues.

Venezuelan Brass Ensemble

The Venezuelan Brass Ensemble came into being in 2003 under the patronage of Dr. José Antonio Abreu and Thomas Clamor as part of the orchestral academic program of Venezuela's El Sistema.

Across Venezuela, El Sistema currently involves 400,000 beneficiaries-75 percent of whom live below the poverty line-in a system that includes more than 1,550 music groups distributed among 286 academic centers. As a result of this work, numerous successful youth ensembles have emerged. Leading the way is the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela (formerly Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra of Venezuela), now one of the most famous and best orchestras in the world. Most of the musicians in the Venezuelan Brass Ensemble are also members the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra.

With its mixture of a classical and South American repertoire, the musicians of the Venezuelan Brass Ensemble impressively show their diverse skills. The first international tour under the direction of Thomas Clamor in 2005 took the Venezuelan Brass Ensemble to Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, and Chile. In September 2005, the ensemble performed as part of the Simón Bolívar Youth Orchestra's third major tour of Germany; its program complemented works by Byrd, Bernstein, and Gershwin with the first performance of the Grand Fanfare for brass instruments by ensemble member Giancarlo Castro.

In 2006, the Venezuelan Brass Ensemble released its first CD, We Got Rhythm, on EMI Classics. Since then, the ensemble has toured extensively, performing at many of the world's greatest venues and festivals, including Royal Albert Hall as part of the BBC Proms, Beethovenfest Bonn, Schleswig-Holstein Musik Festival, Konzerthaus Berlin, Lucerne Festival, Royal Festival Hall, and Salzburg Festival.


Thomas Clamor

Thomas Clamor studied trumpet and percussion at the Hochschule für Musik Detmold. By the time he was 23, he became the youngest musician in the Berliner Philharmoniker. Mr. Clamor also performed as a soloist and chamber musician with various ensembles. He has since taken part in numerous recordings, and also performed on many television and radio programs.

Mr. Clamor's conducting and teaching activities have played important roles in his musical creativity. Beginning in 1987, he has enjoyed guest professorships at music schools throughout Germany, during which he led many international master classes. For 10 years, Mr. Clamor was a professor of chamber music at the Hochschule für Musik Hanns Eisler and later an honorary professor at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music.

Guest conducting engagements have taken Mr. Clamor to the most important European festivals, including the Beethovenfest Bonn, Salzburg, and BBC Proms. He has also conducted in New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Buenos Aires, Santiago, Tokyo, Beijing, Rome, Madrid, and many other cities.

Mr. Clamor's work with the Venezuelan Brass Ensemble is highly acclaimed by both audiences and critics alike. Internationally, he is considered to be one of the most successful specialists in the genre. Mr. Clamor is also the primary conductor of the Saxon Wind Philharmonic and art director of the German Brass Academy.
About the Program
The Venezuelan Brass Ensemble kicks off tonight's concert with a high-energy fanfare written by one of the ensemble's own trumpeters Giancarlo Castro. Opening with pealing trumpets, Grand Fanfare showcases all the instruments in the ensemble to generate an exuberant energy, as well as to paint dramatic vistas of the Venezuelan countryside. The ensemble also performs two other pieces by Castro: Llegada de un noble maestro and Walking Faster.

Following the brilliant opening are selections from Bernstein's West Side Story. A musical retelling of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, this timeless tale of young love set against a background of spectacularly choreographed gang warfare in New York City has found a place at the core of popular culture. About three years after the show began its Broadway run, the composer revisited the score and extracted nine sections to create what he called the Symphonic Dances; the Venezuelan Brass Ensemble performs selections from this instrumental arrangement.

The program includes a bracing tango by musicians Juan Caldarella and Alejandro Scarpino. After having written this piece together in Buenos Aires, Caldarella and Scarpino were struggling to come up with a title. As the story goes, they saw the headlines of a local newspaper that praised the success of tango celebrity Francisco Canaro in Paris. Inspired by this headline, Caldarella rushed to inscribe the score with the title Canaro en Paris.

Tico-Tico no fubá is one of the most well-known songs from Venezuela's neighbor, Brazil. Made famous when Brazilian film star Carmen Miranda sang and danced to the catchy tune in the 1947 movie Copacabana, Zequinha de Abreu's song has since been featured in Disney film segments and even in Woody Allen's Radio Days. With a name that means "sparrow on the cornmeal," Tico-Tico no fubá is written in the signature Brazilian style called choro, featuring upbeat rhythms, virtuosic improvisation, and jaunty syncopation.

This is followed by the nationalistic joropo titled Amalia by Venezuelan composer Francisco de Paula Aguirre. With robust folk rhythms and lyrical melodies, joropo music is strongly identified with Venezuelan culture. Born in Caracas, Aguirre composed works that disseminated into Venezuelan popular culture; his piece Amalia is one of his most well-known works today.

A flamboyant piece by Venezuelan Brass Ensemble percussionist Félix Mendoza brings tonight's program to a close. Opening with sweeping orchestration and dramatic fanfare, Guerra de secciones breaks out into intense drumming and aggressive brass lines. Bringing together a wealth of genres and overflowing with impressive energy, this flashy showstopper is a thrilling end to the evening.

Opening with pealing trumpets, Grand Fanfare showcases all the instruments in the ensemble to generate an exuberant energy, as well as to paint dramatic vistas of the Venezuelan countryside. The ensemble also performs two other pieces by Castro: Llegada de un noble maestro and Walking Faster.

Following the brilliant opening are selections from Bernstein's West Side Story. A musical retelling of Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, this timeless tale of young love set against a background of spectacularly choreographed gang warfare in New York City has found a place at the core of popular culture. About three years after the show began its Broadway run, the composer revisited the score and extracted nine sections to create what he called the Symphonic Dances; the Venezuelan Brass Ensemble performs selections from this instrumental arrangement.

The program includes a bracing tango by musicians Juan Caldarella and Alejandro Scarpino. After having written this piece together in Buenos Aires, Caldarella and Scarpino were struggling to come up with a title. As the story goes, they saw the headlines of a local newspaper that praised the success of tango celebrity Francisco Canaro in Paris. Inspired by this headline, Caldarella rushed to inscribe the score with the title Canaro en Paris.

Tico-Tico no fubá is one of the most well-known songs from Venezuela's neighbor, Brazil. Made famous when Brazilian film star Carmen Miranda sang and danced to the catchy tune in the 1947 movie Copacabana, Zequinha de Abreu's song has since been featured in Disney film segments and even in Woody Allen's Radio Days. With a name that means "sparrow on the cornmeal," Tico-Tico no fubá is written in the signature Brazilian style called choro, featuring upbeat rhythms, virtuosic improvisation, and jaunty syncopation.

This is followed by the nationalistic joropo titled Amalia by Venezuelan composer Francisco de Paula Aguirre. With robust folk rhythms and lyrical melodies, joropo music is strongly identified with Venezuelan culture. Born in Caracas, Aguirre composed works that disseminated into Venezuelan popular culture; his piece Amalia is one of his most well-known works today.

A flamboyant piece by Venezuelan Brass Ensemble percussionist Félix Mendoza brings tonight's program to a close. Opening with sweeping orchestration and dramatic fanfare, Guerra de secciones breaks out into intense drumming and aggressive brass lines. Bringing together a wealth of genres and overflowing with impressive energy, this flashy showstopper is a thrilling end to the evening.

40 Years in 40 Days [ view the entire set ]
An examination and remembrance of a life at 40.

For the 40 days leading up to my 40th birthday, I intend to use my 365 Days project to document and remember my life and lay bare what defines me. 40 years, 40 qualities, 40 days.

Year 21: 1988-1989

In the fall of my junior year, I started dating the lead trumpet player. I was a little starstruck. I couldn't believe that I, this lowly unknown who toiled away in the tenor section, was dating That Guy (had it been 15 years later, I probably would have been thinking "ZOMG! ZOMG! ZOMG!") It seems hilariously absurd to me now -- Jared, the super celebrity. He was just this smart, lanky, awkward, kind, sweet, unassuming, dorky kind of guy. But on the field, he'd stand in front of the band and wail away on the trumpet like a monster, hitting high notes others just dreamed of, and filling the stadium with clear, piercing sound. He'd hit the final note, snap his trumpet down, and the crowd would push to its feet and roar. When he played, it was pure magic.

In early November, after we'd been dating for just about a month, I discovered that I was pregnant. I agonized over what to do. Jared was supportive, telling me that he would be there for me whatever I chose to do. I knew I could not support or raise a child and still finish my degree, and I knew that I was not mature enough to handle the molding and shaping of another small person's psyche. And yet, I felt oddly connected already to the thing inside me. I would put my hand on my belly and close my eyes, listening, waiting for it to tell me what to do. I cried, and raged, and took long, thought-filled walks along the length of of the campus lakeshore. I was scared and lost. After a couple of weeks of searching my conscience, my mind, and the silent mystery in my body, I told Jared that I wanted to have the child and give it up for adoption. It was the best of all possible worlds at that moment. I could honor the connectedness I already felt, give some other couple the gift of a child they couldn't otherwise have, and continue building a life of my own at a pace that made sense for me. As Jared and I walked into town for dinner that night, I felt buoyant, as if I were floating weightless through the crisp fall air. A sense of peace ran through my body and into my fingers and toes. I laughed for the first time in weeks.

The next morning, I started bleeding heavily. Jared was in class, unreachable, so I called Sherman at work. He told me not to move, and that he would be over immediately to take me to the hospital. In the ER, a flurry of activity ensued. They drew vials of blood, and I was wheeled into an examination room and propped into stirrups. The doctor performing the exam enigmatically exclaimed, "You have a beautiful cervix! Just textbook!" As I was pondering how one is supposed to respond to such a compliment, I was also imagining a small ball of cells hurtling through a sewer pipe to a filtration plant somewhere, its matter pummeled and pulverized, and its molecules finding their way someday into the cold, expansive waters of Lake Michigan. They wheeled me back into my curtained cubicle, and I stared off into space while Sherman held my hand. It was just not meant to be, he whispered as he gently brushed the hair away from my wet and swollen eyes. I could not deny that my life had suddenly gotten much easier, but it had also taken on a kind of pain, the depth of which I feared to plumb.

Sherman stayed with me throughout the day in the ER, then took me back to his apartment to rest. The doctors wanted someone with me, and I did not yet have the energy to recount the day's events for Jared. I called my mom from Sherman's apartment and told her what had happened. I had no choice. The insurance claim was going to show up at their house, and the jig would be up. I cried, and she said she would pray for the lost child. I did not particularly believe in prayer, but I felt comforted by the thought. The next day, I returned to campus to find Jared, and we cried together. He held my hand and said he was not going anywhere without me.

Jared and I became fiercely attached to each other. I spent every night with him in his room at his fraternity house, wedged between the bed and the wall, suspended over the narrow gap, because the long, thin dorm beds weren't big enough for two people. In the mornings, I would leave for my job, opening and monitoring the Macintosh lab for the early risers. Later in the morning, Jared and I shared a class, and he would bring me buttered bagels so that I could get something to eat. On Sundays, we would sit in bed and do the crossword puzzle together until it was finished, or until we were stumped, and when evening came, we would walk hand-in-hand to Subway for sandwiches. We were an old, married couple at 20.

In the spring, Jared auditioned for the Disney All-American College Band, an elite group of the best collegiate musicians in the country, and a plum summer gig. He was accepted, and was assigned to the Anaheim band. At the same time, I began to toy with the idea of accompanying my best friend, Mark, on his summer trip down to Florida. Mark had worked at Disney World in Orlando the previous summer, and was going to do so again. I had not yet lined up a job for the summer, and it sounded like fun, so I decided to go, despite having no guarantee of a job once I got there.

Mark and I rented a cheap apartment in Orlando for the summer, and I applied at Disney's casting office. I was told I might be too big for their Attractions (i.e., rides) costumes, and so I might have to work in Food Service or Sanitation. I was crushed and then angry. I had self-esteem issues, but even I knew that this was ridiculous. I was only a size 11, though I was extraordinarily busty, and might have given the impression of being larger than I really was. As it turns out, there were a few rides with costumes that "big," and so I was assigned to the Grand Prix Raceway.

For the first week, I was herded around the property with a bunch of other new hires for orientation. We learned the history of the company, and the layout and functioning of the park, but more importantly, we were drilled on the company's customer service philosophy. We were told that we were part of a perfect, immersive fantasy for our guests, and that we were to do nothing that interrupted that fantasy. That meant we were absolutely not allowed to walk through the park in costume, lest you be seen in Frontier Land wearing a costume from Tomorrow Land, thus destroying the frontier fantasy. We were to use the system of underground tunnels to get anywhere we needed to go. There were unmarked doors hidden all over the park, into and out of which, Disney cast members would quietly slip, like elfin phantoms. This orientation process was colloquially known as "pixie dusting," and it was very effective.

Once I was thoroughly "pixie dusted," I picked up my costume, my steel-toed boots, and my name tag, and went to work for the Mouse. It was an interesting, creepy, and wonderful place. Giant costumed characters roamed headless in the dark, underground tunnels, carrying their plastic faces under their arms. Crusty, old, cranks swore and smoked behind the scenery, then returned to the public areas, only to kneel down and gently comfort a lost and crying child. There have always been jokes about the rigid sweetness of Disney and its almost totalitarian insistence on the veneer of innocence, and there is truth in those jokes. But there is also a kind of truth in the fantasy. People come there because they want to be immersed in innocence. If they just wanted to ride rides, they would go to an amusement park with roller coasters and wild, spinning things. At Disney, they can pretend for a few hours that the world is actually a simple and good place, where adults kneel to speak to children, and fairies slip in and out of view through doors and portals you never quite see.

Who am I?

I am a strong advocate of choice.

Many people will read my story and think that I must have emerged from that time committed to the idea that life begins, and the connection between mother and child is sealed, at conception. This is not the truth I carried out with me, when I stumbled, wounded, out of those experiences. What I remember is the agony of the decision process, and the care and totality of physical and emotional energy with which it was carried out. I recognize that there will be people reading this who disagree with my conclusions, and I respect their right to their opinion, but I can not possibly fathom taking that choice out of someone else's hands. The devastation would be too complete.
