72. L'uovo Moderno
by Richard Kirwan

Richard Kirwan is an artist who makes paintings. His work is characterised by hard-edged, geometric compositions, informed by the disciplines of mathematics, science, architecture and design.
L'uovo Moderno (2013) employs a ‘crazy-paving’ design that hovers between chaos and control, set against a central band of asterisk motifs.
The Italian title refers to a mosaic colour way that the artist first encountered in the classical surroundings of the Palazzo Doria Pamphilj in Rome. Meaning ‘Modern Egg’ the bold yet intricate design uses the symbolic quality of the egg as a point of origin – indicating the evolution of ancient art through to the contemporary.
Kirwan’s work has been widely exhibited both nationally and internationally. Recent solo exhibitions include Richard Kirwan - Entre Les Etats at the Centre Nationale Des Arts Plastiques, Clermont-Ferrand, France (2012) and The Post-Critical Unknown at Galerie Hollenbach, Stuttgart, Germany (2010). Group shows include The Indiscipline of Painting – International Abstraction from the 1960s to Now at Tate St Ives, UK (2012) Tell The Children at La Salle de Bains, Lyon, France (2012) and Pop Molecule at Aubin Gallery, London (2012). Forthcoming projects in 2013 include TEMPLATE at Two Rooms Gallery, Auckland, New Zealand, and a group show at FORT, London.
Kirwan’s work is included in The National Art Collection, The Saatchi Collection, The Groucho Club Collection, The Fondazione Giorgio Cini, and The Royal Academy of Arts Archive as well as private collections in the UK, Germany, France, Italy and the US.
