More than 300 glitter-covered Columbus yelpers came out to Yelp's Glam Jam at COSI to sample an awing spread of food from 11 local food vendors and imbibe with the help of three booze sponsors. Upon arrival, many made pit stops at the two glam stations offering mini services while others made a b line to the two photobooths that captured celebrity-style ring lights (a certain style of portrait) and group shots of everyone wearing their glitziest garb. Easily the true star of the party, Columbus's most popular drag queen, Nina West, performed two numbers complete with backup dancers. More than 0 and dozens of much-needed items were donated to charity partner, Dress for Success Columbus, making Yelp Columbus's first open party a drop-dead, five-star night to remember.

OXFAM

Famous for his portraits of celebrities like Kate Moss and Kylie, renowned photographer Rankin has joined forces with Oxfam Ireland to bring the faces of those caught up in the war zones of the Democratic Republic of Congo to Dublin.

Starting April 30th and running until July 31 st at Wolf Tone Park (beside the Jervis Street shopping centre, Rankin's exhibition – sponsored by Irish Aid, the Government's overseas aid programme and supported by Dublin City Council – sees his celebrity portraiture being used with entirely different subjects – the residents of Mugunga camp, home to over 250,000 people displaced by Congo's harrowing violence.

Photographed against Rankin's trademark white backdrop rather than in their everyday surroundings, those in the portraits boldly defy the war victim tag and shine out as real people with individuality, humour and warmth. Jasmine, a young girl, mimics Rankin with her own camera made from a tin can; Tumani a tailor, smiles broadly as she balances her sewing machine on her head; and Marina, a grandmother, stands proudly with her grandchildren by her side.

The exhibition's name Cheka Kidogo, meaning “laugh a little” in Swahili, celebrates the spirit of the Congolese people in the face of adversity, but was also the phrase that people called out to their friends being photographed. The exhibition will move on to Belfast after its showing in Dublin .

Rankin said:

“I think we have become anesthetised to traditional photographs of conflict victims. By taking my celebrity portraiture style of photography and applying it to the survivors in the camps in Congo I have tried to get beyond the statistics and show the human side of the conflict.

“It is crazy that we hear nothing about the Democratic Republic of Congo. The level of suffering there is horrendous, but it hardly makes the news. I heard awful stories of young girls being raped and people fleeing attacks on their villages. Despite the suffering that they have been through the people of Congo are just like us and need our help. I hope the exhibition will wake people up to what is going on.”

The scale of Congo 's suffering defies belief. Since 1998, the country has lost 5.4 million people to conflict, and the deadly disease and hunger that it has unleashed. Over a million people are displaced in the eastern part of the country, with over 500,000 people having fled from violence in the last year alone. Rape is epidemic. This year more than 1,100 women a month have reported being raped, although the real figure is likely to be much higher.

Speaking about his experience in the Congo , Rankin said:

“I felt energised by the strength of the people and their will to survive and to make their lives better. Yet they all have these really awful stories. They have all seen their brothers and sisters, wives, husbands, daughters or sons killed in front of them, and you can see it in their eyes.”

Jim Clarken Oxfam Ireland 's Chief Executive who has just returned from the Democratic Republic of Congo said “ I know first hand the devastation this forgotten emergency is having on the people there, and know the importance of continued support for this region."

Oxfam Ireland is very proud to host the exhibition and hopes it will raise awareness of the crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Oxfam's ongoing work in camps for millions of displaced people. In this paticular series of photographs, featuring Audrey Hepburn, Cardiff used a method called chiaroscuro meaning “light-dark”.

WAR PHOTOGRAPHY, MEET FASHION PHOTOGRAPHY - Model Laura Peterson's negative sandwiched with an image of devastation in Lebanon after the 34-Day Summer War

I have been widely criticized for commercializing photojournalism and war photography since I appeared in the Warner Brothers television show "In Harms Way." Since then I have been working hard on ways of making my work even more commercial.
The bottom line is that for photojournalism to do any good, it must be seen — and seen by as large of an audience as possible.

Photojournalism has become a rigid and stagnant industry. It is obsessed with rules, hiding behind "ethics" in order to produce nothing but formulaic, generic press photography and generally forgetting about the fact that it is our job to use our ART to educate the world and bring about awareness. My personal mission is to go beyond what others are doing in hopes of creating works that are completely new and fresh, instead of mimicking the work and career paths of others.

Several years ago I went from covering the conflict in Gaza straight to New York to shoot Fashion Week. My entire time in Gaza I did not see one other photographer, yet at fashion week I was packed in with 50 or more shooters during runway shows. I was distressed by this in the beginning, but soon I began to see possibilities.

What if you could use the glamor and sex appeal of fashion and celebrity photography along with the messages in photojournalism? What if you could create works of art that would not only stun people visually, but also educate people about a subject that they may otherwise ignore or find too depressing to pay attention to?

Years ago when I did my work using film and darkrooms I fell in love with a process called "Negative Sandwiching" or "Sandwich Printing" or "Multiple Printing." This process involved actually placing two negatives on top of each other before exposing the image (alternately you could expose using one negative and then again with a second). The same process can be done digitally now with much more accuracy and detail.

I would like to announce that I am beginning to take my career in a new direction. I am not now, nor will I ever give up photojournalism, but it is time to go far beyond the limits of the profession.

Six months ago I began shooting models and celebrities to work on creating composite images of beauty, sex and fame mixed with conflict, crisis and disasters. I am in the process of making a book as well as an international exhibition of this work. All of the models and celebrities involved in this project have donated their time, as have I, and the proceeds from this project will benefit refugees of conflict.
