Bilgore Star Ruby "Star of Katandru"

Some of the most interesting members of the gem kingdom are those reflecting bright bands of light that form stars. This optical phenomenon, called chatoyancy, is caused by light reflecting off of parallel bundles of tiny hollow tubes or fibrous crystals of another mineral inside the gemstone. When a properly oriented stone is cut en cabochon, round or oval shape with a domed top and flat bottom, the star is visible. This exceptional 16.21 carat Sri Lankan star ruby, the "Star of Katandru," has a well-centered star with straight arms of sharp intensity, and a uniform and beautiful body color. The Star of Katandru, named in honor of the donor’s children, was generously gifted by Jeffrey Bilgore in 2004.

Spanish Inquisition Necklace

The Spanish Inquisition Necklace consists of two strands of antique-cut diamonds and emeralds to which a lower pendant and upper chain containing modern, brilliant-cut diamonds were added. The necklace contains 374 diamonds and 15 emeralds. The emeralds undoubtedly came from Colombia, while the diamonds were obtained from India, the only source of diamonds until 1723. The large, central, barrel-shaped emerald weighs approximately 45 carats. Due to its rich color and exceptional clarity, it is one of the world's finest emeralds. The stones were probably cut in India in the seventeenth century, making them the earliest cut gems in the National Gem Collection. Although the origin of the necklace's name is unknown, it was probably created this century in reference to its similarity to other jewelry of the period. However, according to legend, at least a portion or a variation of the necklace belonged to Spanish royalty and was later worn by ladies of the French court. The necklace was purchased by the Maharaja of Idore in the early twentieth century. In 1948, Harry Winston purchased the necklace from the Maharaja's son. The necklace then became part of Winston's "Court of Jewels" traveling exhibition. Cora Hubbard Williams of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania bought the necklace from Winston in 1955 and donated it to the Smithsonian Institution in 1972.

It's almost time for this year's Toronto Taste. Toronto Taste is a fund raiser for Second Harvest where chefs from across Toronto come together to donate their time and their food to help raise money to feed the hungry in Toronto.

It's an amazing day of food, celebrity chefs, drink and doing good.

This year Toronto Taste is moving back downtown and will be held in Yorkville.

Canada’s Athlete of the Year in 2002, Catriona is the speed skater whose world record-setting wins captivated and inspired millions of Canadians.

A two-time Olympic Gold Medallist and the fastest woman on ice, Catriona has been honoured as the Canadian flag bearer at the 2002 Olympic Winter Games opening ceremonies. It was these very same Games that she won the gold medal in the 500-metre event, defending her 1998 Olympic 500m gold and became the first and only Canadian to defend a gold medal at any Olympic Games. She broke the world record for the event 8 times, and at the 2002 Games, set an Olympic record time of 37.30 seconds. She is also a 5-time World Champion.

Although Catriona retired from the world of competitive speed skating, she is still a central figure in the sport. She served as the primary colour commentator for the CTV television broadcast of long track speed skating at the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Winter Games which earned her a Gemini for Best Sports Analyst. Catriona will be the morning show co-host of CTV’s 2012 Olympic Summer Games from London, England.

Catriona is not only a world champion but a talented motivational speaker as well. Articulate, engaging and fluently bilingual, she connects with audiences by discussing how to achieve personal excellence and motivating people to realize their full potential. Her achievements have landed her in the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame, the Canadian Olympic Committee Sports Hall of Fame, and was appointed an Officer of the Order of Canada.

Toronto native, Wesley Badanjak completed a Bachelor of Biology at York University and received a Bachelor of Fashion Design with Honours at Ryerson University. While studying fashion, Badanjak garnered many awards for his distinctive style and tailoring expertise, which resulted in two highly regarded internships for women’s wear label PEROS and Holt Renfrew Design Studios. He was named winner of the Telus Mobility Canadian Fashion Designer Awards in 2007 and had the opportunity of representing Canada at the REMIX competition in Milan, Italy for superior fur design in 2008. Those of you who follow me in other spaces are probably already aware
of my frustration & fury over the ill-informed policies of Facebook
and Google Plus to require use of a person's legal name on their
services. As someone who has been trying to provide support to
underserved and marginalized communities and individuals for most of
my professional career (as in decades), I am intimately aware of the
dangers of being forced to use a name that might make you a target or
which might convey unnecessary information about you to those who have
no business knowing it. Others have ably pointed out how this sort of
policy effectively empowers the identity thieves and stalkers more
than it protects anyone. And others have pointed out that the
liability for privacy invasions committed via these services should
really rest with the service that forced use of the public name.
Wouldn't it be interesting if victims of identity theft started suing
Facebook?

With Google having announced that people who don't follow their naming
guidelines have four days to get their affairs in order, this is
particularly timely.

Google proves that they (a) don't get it, (b) don't care, and (c) have
no problem being the bully in grade school classroom who sucks up to
the teacher when they are watching. I am normally a huge Google fan,
but this is just too too profoundly distressing for me. That they are
entirely willing to compromise safety of victims and marginalized
persons for some vague possibility of a benefit they are unable to
clearly articulate and for which there is insufficient evidence to
justify. If this was a healthcare situation and a clinician pressed a
patient to accept a treatment with similar levels of evidence that
clinician would be at high risk of losing his license.

Brownie Tower, Sugar Spun Scene

I think one can imagine the childlike glee of all the attendees who stayed for the aptly named "Sweet Dreams" after party. Thankfully I was carrying my P&S - so I captured the "sweet" scene partway into the carnage. There's nothing like a room full of well dressed (and heeled) people feasting on sugar laden treats and downing copious amounts of liquor.

I think this brownie tower was still left intact by the end of the evening.

Anyone know who the girl in the cap is? Photographers were like swarming around her. I think she arrived on a flight from Dubai.
