Left & Right Gems
With the Tiffany & Co. Foundation Endowment, the Smithsonian was able to acquire two important gems for the National Gem Collection: a 15.93 carat tsavorite garnet and a 40.10 carat tourmaline. Tsavorite is a highly prized gem variety of grossular garnet. It was first discovered in 1967 near Kenya's Tsavo National Park. This region on the Kenya-Tanzania border remains the only source of gem tsavorite. The most valuable tsavorites are an intense green to blue-green and can sometimes be confused with emerald. This tsavorite exhibits a highly-prized vivid green color. It is large in size for a tsavorite and represents a significant upgrade for the National Gem Collection. The 40.10 carat tourmaline is from a recent find in Mozambique. Tourmaline gems are found in the complete range of the color spectrum, in exquisite shades unlike any other gem material. This gem exhibits an intense purple color that is very rare for tourmaline. Commonly, tourmalines of this color from Mozambique are heat-treated to turn them a neon blue color similar to the rare and valuable Paraiba tourmalines of Brazil. This gem was not heat treated, probably due to the natural inclusions that would not withstand the heat without shattering the stone, or perhaps because of its particular intense and attractive natural color. Rare in both size and color, and a recent find from an interesting locality, this tourmaline is a wonderful addition to the National Gem Collection.

Center Gem
Hydroxyl-Herderite is a rare calcium beryllium phosphate mineral that typically occurs in pegmatite deposits as small, unimpressive crystals. This magnificent herderite gemstone from Brazil is a major addition to the National Gem Collection for several reasons. Its large size and beautiful green color make it perhaps the largest and finest known gem hydroxyl-herderite. It is a significant upgrade in that the only faceted hydroxyl-herderite gems previously in the collection weighed 5.9 and 1.2 carats, respectively. The mineral hydroxyl-herderite was first discovered in Germany; other localities include Brazil, Russia and the United States. This gem was acquired with endowment funds from the Tiffany & Co. Foundation.

IT ALL BEGAN...when he saw a stranger lighting his girlfriend's Camel in a flirtatious manner. He noticed the sly smile of satisfaction on his girlfriend's lips as she sucked up that first big puff of smoke afforded by his large and oversized monogrammed Zippo lighter. The man with the fractured elbow, a man who has the eyes of an eagle, noted the details on the large Zippo lighter; he read the inscription inscribed on the lighter: "To Big Man on Campus, from Suzy"

"Who is that nut that's knocking on the window anyway?" a customer seated near the window asked the bartender.

The bartender shook his head, pretending he didn't know Foster. Foster is the name of the man with the fractured elbow.

"Yeow, why in the hell doesn't the S.O.B. just come in? What a ______idiot?

A close-up of a piece of artwork on the Celebrity Constellation.

OK, it's not the Met or MoMA, but some of the pieces are interesting and/or fun! I was too lazy to take photos of the placques naming the artists, so I apologize for not giving credit!
